Cowboys Draft

With the Cowboys sitting at home watching this Super Bowl and the CBA in flux there is only one thing for us to nit-pick and that is the April NFL draft. The Cowboys have their earliest pick since 2003 when they drafted Terrence Newman at # 5.  They hold the # 9 pick at this moment, although it is not atypical for Jerry to wheel and deal on draft day and trade high picks for a fistful of lower ones. So now let the debating begin: Should the Cowboys trade out of their # 9 pick to get more picks? Also, should the Cowboys draft on needs or for best talent available? These are the two questions we must brood over as the draft day looms.

I'm with the school of thought that you can't trade away from the most talented players. This is the highest pick we've had in over 7 years and we need an impact player immediately. Who cares about getting more picks that are later in the draft? We don't need more players that the Cowboys will need 5 years to figure out if they can be put on the field. The whole damn 2009 draft was a whiff. "We're drafting for special teams." That is the stupidest draft strategy in the history of the league and all the cuts to the players in that class this year have proven this so. We have a chance to get some WOW players and they need to keep their draft position so they have the best chance to do this.

Now what about drafting on need versus best talent available? First off, what do the Cowboys need? There are so many gaping holes to fill. The offensive line needs an overhaul...the secondary needs to be scrapped (especially the safeties) and there need to be upgrades at running back and on the defensive front. If their pick comes at number 9 and they have, lets say, Cam Newton or A.J. Green are available, would they jump at talents like them? They better fucking not. I believe that the Cowboys believe that they have enough talent in place to win now, and their fans expect them to win now. The windows are closing on Romo, Witten, Ware and some of their other veterans. I don't think you can draft for the future and that is what drafting someone like Cam Newton is. We need to draft to fill the holes and reload for 2011. Some will point to the Packers drafting Aaron Rogers high when they still had Favre, and say "well look at where he is now." Great, but that was over 3 years ago and this Cowboys team doesn't have 3 years to groom another QB. Romo is good enough to be the guy right now.

Since I don't trust Jerry Jones, I would never put it past him to get too much drool on his chin over a wide receiver and turn the Cowboys into the Detroit Lions by drafting A.J. Green despite the abundance of talent the Cowboys have at receiver. This would prove that he has entered the Al Davis realm. Jerry was quoted the other week that he didn't think the Cowboys cornerbacks didn't play as bad as perceived. If he thinks that then he didn’t watching the games this year. The Cowboys cornerbacks sucked, their safeties sucked, their pass rush sucked and their offensive line sucked. Address all those areas that suck instead of grabbing someone who you think will be a future star down the road but not serviceable this year. With their draft position the Cowboys can find impact players that can play now in areas of need.

More draft thoughts coming….
