Jeff Fisher out in Tenn

Quick thought on Jeff Fisher...

He was let go today by the Tennesee Titans after 16 years as the head coach of the Titans/Oilers. I have a great amount of respect for Fisher and I think that not only is he a good guy but a very good coach. But why is everyone acting like this guy has ever won a thing? Besides one AFC championship in 16 years, Fisher has won nothing. He's only had 6 winning seasons in his tenure. That is not impressive at all. Granted he's been competing against Peyton Manning and Co. for the last decade but I think its safe to say that the Titans (aside from the Music City Miracle) have been a disappointment. Fisher would be a great addition to the staff of many teams and I'm sure he can still be a successful coach in this league, but lets not act like he's a great coach and that the next team he takes over is on their way to the big dance.

Cowboys Draft

With the Cowboys sitting at home watching this Super Bowl and the CBA in flux there is only one thing for us to nit-pick and that is the April NFL draft. The Cowboys have their earliest pick since 2003 when they drafted Terrence Newman at # 5.  They hold the # 9 pick at this moment, although it is not atypical for Jerry to wheel and deal on draft day and trade high picks for a fistful of lower ones. So now let the debating begin: Should the Cowboys trade out of their # 9 pick to get more picks? Also, should the Cowboys draft on needs or for best talent available? These are the two questions we must brood over as the draft day looms.

I'm with the school of thought that you can't trade away from the most talented players. This is the highest pick we've had in over 7 years and we need an impact player immediately. Who cares about getting more picks that are later in the draft? We don't need more players that the Cowboys will need 5 years to figure out if they can be put on the field. The whole damn 2009 draft was a whiff. "We're drafting for special teams." That is the stupidest draft strategy in the history of the league and all the cuts to the players in that class this year have proven this so. We have a chance to get some WOW players and they need to keep their draft position so they have the best chance to do this.

Now what about drafting on need versus best talent available? First off, what do the Cowboys need? There are so many gaping holes to fill. The offensive line needs an overhaul...the secondary needs to be scrapped (especially the safeties) and there need to be upgrades at running back and on the defensive front. If their pick comes at number 9 and they have, lets say, Cam Newton or A.J. Green are available, would they jump at talents like them? They better fucking not. I believe that the Cowboys believe that they have enough talent in place to win now, and their fans expect them to win now. The windows are closing on Romo, Witten, Ware and some of their other veterans. I don't think you can draft for the future and that is what drafting someone like Cam Newton is. We need to draft to fill the holes and reload for 2011. Some will point to the Packers drafting Aaron Rogers high when they still had Favre, and say "well look at where he is now." Great, but that was over 3 years ago and this Cowboys team doesn't have 3 years to groom another QB. Romo is good enough to be the guy right now.

Since I don't trust Jerry Jones, I would never put it past him to get too much drool on his chin over a wide receiver and turn the Cowboys into the Detroit Lions by drafting A.J. Green despite the abundance of talent the Cowboys have at receiver. This would prove that he has entered the Al Davis realm. Jerry was quoted the other week that he didn't think the Cowboys cornerbacks didn't play as bad as perceived. If he thinks that then he didn’t watching the games this year. The Cowboys cornerbacks sucked, their safeties sucked, their pass rush sucked and their offensive line sucked. Address all those areas that suck instead of grabbing someone who you think will be a future star down the road but not serviceable this year. With their draft position the Cowboys can find impact players that can play now in areas of need.

More draft thoughts coming….

Jets put their foot in their mouth & Cutler undergoes in game sex change

I know were supposed to be looking ahead to the Super Bowl in Dallas but its tough not to look back and smirk at what transpired last weekend in the NFL.  The NYJ will have to wait until some other time to get past the AFC championship game. After getting rolled over by the Steelers, we will no longer have to listen to their crass and obnoxious Ra-Ra speeches and transparent talk. (Actually, Bart Scott's "Cant Wait" post game speech was one of the best I've ever heard...but it turns out that the Jets couldn't wait to embarrass themselves yet again.)

Big Ben barely had to play (he completed 3 2nd half passes) and the Steelers still were able to handily beat the Jets. Don't be fooled by the score. The Steelers defense put on the brakes in the second half and the Steelers offense pretty much napped through the rest of the game. The Jets played with such a lack of heart and intensity in the first half, it had to make everyone from Hamden to Seacaucus sick. How can you not come to play in the first half of an AFC championship game? How is that possible when you supposedly have the best motivator in the game? How can this defense that was GUARANTEED to be the best D by the end of the year, resort to attempted arm tackles? Disgrace.

The Jets say that people shouldn't be able to criticize them because they are a good team and they got so close to the Super Bowl. Now, they did have a great season. Anyone who plays in a title game obviously had a great year but if you're writing "Super Bowl" on Chris Mortensen's ESPN bus then you failed. Rex has obviously revived this franchise but its time to put your foot in your mouth Rexy. Losing all of these guarantees is embarrassing and at best makes you look like Patrick Ewing. Next year the Jets should try to muster more out of their bluster.

As for the other game, yes, the Packers won and they are a scary team but that has been overshadowed by Jay Cutler's vagina. At first I was defending him because I know he gets knocked around all the time and still plays. He gets sacked more than Americans lose jobs. But still. Bro...it's the DAMN NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME.

If there is ever a time to man up that would be it. Instead, Cutler underwent an in-game sex change and manned down. On the stage where champions are born, Cutler gave himself an abortion. Cutler's injury diagnosis was an MCL sprain. That is a tough injury and from experience I know that it is very hard and painful to play on but let's not forget that Phillip Rivers played with a worse MCL sprain a few years ago against the Patriots in the playoffs. And apparently Jay Cutler was seen in a steakhouse after the game walking up the stairs? Bad PR bro, take the elevator. Sorry Cutler but you only get so many opportunities to play on that stage so castrating your self in your first rodeo isn't the greatest idea. Maybe this will wipe the smirk off of Cutlers face: His school girl tendencies allowed for Caleb Hanie to play in the game and that gave the Bears a better chance at scoring points.
